LUTHER W. POWELL WINDSOR - Luther Whitmel "Lu Whit" Powell, 87, of the 200 block of Hofler Ave, died February 21, 2005, in Bertie Memorial Hospital. Mr. Powell was born in Windsor, NC on Feb 12, 1918, to the late William Luther and Julia Stokes Powell. He was co-owner of Powell and Stokes Inc. Lu Whit was a member of Cashie Baptist Church, the VFW and was a former member of many local civic clubs. He was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the 753rd Railroad Battalion in North Africa, Italy and the Phillipines. Survivors include his wife Piercie "Pete" Stalls Powell of Windsor; daughters, June P. Barnhardt and husband Bob of Tarboro, NC, and Whit P. Leffel and husband John of Cohasset, and many nieces and nephews. The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb 22, at Walker Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held today at 2 p.m. in Edgewood Cemetery by the Rev. Dennis Conner and the Rev. Jack Byrd. Military rites will be observed. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Cashie Baptist Church, 221 S. Queen St., Windsor, NC 27983. |
