Clara E. Black of Steelville, Missouri, formerly of Sullivan, passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2001 at the age of 94 years. Mrs. Black was born on July 10, 1906 in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Andrew and Jennie (Anderson) Nelson. On February 26, 1927 she was joined in marriage to Raymond L. Black of Chicago and to this union two children were born. In 1947 Clara moved with her family to Bourbon, Missouri. In addition to serving her family as a devoted wife, mother and homemaker, she also worked outside the home at times during her adult years. Most notably, Clara and Raymond were very well known and respected in the Bourbon area for their paper route on which they hand carried the Post-Dispatch or the Globe Democrat to their clients front door. Also, Clara later worked for approximately 10 years as a nurse's aid at the Sullivan Community Hospital. She found pleasure in crocheting, sewing, gardening, canning and cooking. Mrs. Black was baptized at an early age and was a follower of the Methodist faith. She will be remembered and cherished as a loving mother, a great mother-in-law and a woman who was easy going, cheerful and extremely patient. She is survived by one son, Carl Black and wife, Goldie, and one daughter, Donna Taylor and husband, Marvin, all of Sullivan; five grandchildren, Michael and Barbara Black, Jacqueline Johnson, and Richard and Dale Tayloe. Eleven great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Black was preceded in death by four brothers, Chester, Harvey, Axel and Norval Nelson, and five sisters, Agnes Oates, Anna Brown, Florence Ahlman, Lilly Witte and Jenny Nelson. Funeral services were conducted at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, May 14, 2001 from the Chapel of the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with Dr. Bart Hildreth officiating. Interment was in the Bacon Cemetery.
