After graduation from Grifton High School in 1969, he attended Chowan College in Murfreesboro, NC with the goal of becoming a lawyer. After the first year and not enough money to return to Chowan, he attended Lenior Community College in Kinston, NC and began working part-time for Piedmont Airlines. He then decided to move to Winston Salem and take a full time job with Piedmont. He quickly climbed the ladder to success with Piedmont Airlines. Although he worked in Winston Salem with Piedmont, he lived in the Cherry Street Apartments in Kernersville, NC. He Uncle John Lee Tayloe was living in Kernersville at this time. He then moved into an apartment in Winston Salem, NC. At Piedmont he and Judy met and were married in October 1975. When Piedmont Airlines merged with USAir, Johnnie and Judy elected to stay in Winston Salem, NC to raise their family. After leaving Piedmont, Johnnie owned and operated two businesses during the next 8 years. In 1996, he started working for a friend as a National Sales and Marketing Director a Telecommunications Company in Greensboro, NC. Hobbies included flying, golfing, traveling.
