NOTE I Charles S. Williams was told by my father that he farmed and also ran his own auto repair shop and gas station in Powellsville, North Carolina. During the depression era in late 1929 and 1930, he lost his farm and shop, and went to work for Hackney Truck and Body Co. , until his Dad became ill and could not manage his home and farm without my Dads assistance. Dad finally had to move to Washington D.C. to find work to support his family. He made the trip alone to find a job. He walked the streets finally wearing out his shoe soles and had to put cardboard in his shoes. He ate in soup kitchens. He finally got a job as heavy equipment operator at the sewer department for the D. C. Government. When WW II started there was a labor shortage so he got a second job working nights at the Conlin Baking Company, it became Wonder Bakery, they bought out Certified Bakery, later known as County Fair Bakery. He was offered job as Superintendent at the bakery and quit the D. C. Government job and went to work full time at the bakery in the middle of the 40's. I myself would go to the bakery at nights and stay until Dad would get off work and we would ride the streetcar and bus home at day-break. He finally retired and went to McKeesport Pa. as superintendent of a bakery for several years. He then moved back to Washington D. C. He and Mom and Butch lived on Prout St. S.E. and Fendall St. S.E. He bought a 1948 Plymouth and would drive to our house in Maryland quite often. He enjoyed being with the grandchildren and eating Amelia's cooking. He enjoyed the garden we had in our back yard. |
