JOHN HOLDEN, son of Richard Holden, lived and established a family near the upper waters of Nicholson's Fork of Keowee River. This was located four or five miles east of Salem Post Office, in Pickens Co., currently Oconee County, South Carolina. He owned a large tract of land and slaves. The post office known as Holden was maintained for many years and was located on a plot carved from his 1,000 acre plantation. He died in 1852 and is buried in the family cemetery on his home tract of land near Salem, South Carolina. Family records indicate John was married twice. The first marriage was to Manerva Alexander, who was the mother of some if not all of his children. His second marriage was to Mary as mentioned in his estate probated in Pickens County, SC in 1852. He had Eleven children: |
