Died from mortal wounds received near Winchester, VA, July 17, 1863. Gen. Johnston Pettigrew was one of the distinguished leaders of the confederacy and his war record; especially his conspicuous bravery at the Battle of Gettysburg is a matter of history. He was never married. Prior to the war between the States he traveled extensively both in America and in Europe, where he studied for several years. He was a gifted writer and left several books, which show the cultivated habit of his mind. He studied law and at one time practiced his profession with his cousin the Hon. James Louis Petigru of Charleston, but foreseeing the on-coming war, he returned to NC, where his life was dedicated to the services of his native Stat |
