SARAH C. RICE WINDSOR - Sarah Newbern Cobb Rice, 94, daughter of Alethia Jane and William Judson Cobb went to eternal rest Feb. 5, 2004. Sarah was born in Windsor, Feb. 23, 1909, and lived the majority of her life in her ancestral home, "Cobb's Hill", in Windsor. Sarah was a devoted mother and wife and was affectionately known as "Mammy" to her grandchildren and "Aunt Sarah" to numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. She was a member of Cashie Baptist Church. Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Van Buren Rice and daughter, Lucy Judson Rice. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Patricia Rice of Suffolk and daughter, Sarah Malinda Rice of Greenville, NC; a sister, Mary Willard Hunter of Kingsport, Tenn; granddaughters, Karen Hurdle Riggsbee and husband, F.A. Riggsbee, Jr of Raleigh, NC; Penny R. Frye and husband Barry of Surry, Va., and Vanessa Rice Culbertson and husband Curtis of Portsmouth; and great-grandsons, Jacob, Jared and Joshua Frye and Jordan Culbertson. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Edgewood Cemetery by the Rev. Jack Byrd. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Walker Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Windsor Rescue Squad, PO Box 74, Windsor, NC 27983.
