Herman D. Phelps Herman D. Phelps, 79, a native of Beaufort County, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008. A graveside service will be held at Pinewood Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Saturday to honor his life. Herman was the son of the late William Roy and Virginia Dare Phelps. He served on the faculty at Campbell University for ten years. He also served on the faculty and as an administrator at East Carolina University for almost 30 years retiring in 1988 as Director of Continuing Education and Professor Emeritus. He served 32 years in the military which included active duty and reserve duty in both the Navy and Air Force retiring in 1977 with the rank of Colonel. Herman was active in a number of professional associations dealing with adult education. He served as President of the National Association of Professional Educators and served on the board of directors for several State and National associations. Among his many awards was the Grumman Award presented to him by the North Carolina Adult Education Association for Outstanding Service to adults in North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the late Doris Ann Hall Phelps; two brothers; and a sister He is survived by his wife, Margaret Hamlett Phelps, of the home; daughters, Lynn P. Ross, of Winterville, Laura P. Jones and husband, Bobby, and Lois P. Hurley, all of Greenville; stepdaughter, Kimberly Moskowitz and husband, Saul, of Silver Spring, Md.; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, George Rudolph and wife, Margaret; and sister, Margaret P. Goode and husband, Greg. No flowers please.
